Carrickfergus Castle
County Antrim

Situated on a basalt projection from the shore, forming a rough oval in plan. Square central stone keep with an outer and inner ward defended by curtain walls of basalt rubble. Fronted by large gatehouse flanked by 2 rounded towers. Internal buildings and store houses. Many changes of use and development over the centuries
