
Clipsham Limestone
Clipsham Limestone is an oolitic limestone, Middle Jurassic in age (around 180 million years old) and still actively quarried near Clipsham, Rutland where it has been quarried since Roman times, quarries include Holywell, Old Quarry and Hooby Lane. It is a cream to brown, shelly stone which has a variable porosity ranging from 5 to 18% depending on the source. It is usually a very durable stone and is used throughout the United Kingdom, examples include Oxford and Cambridge Universities and the Houses of Parliament, London
