Ballycastle Sandstone
Used throughout Co. Antrim and occasionally in Belfast. The main lithology used for building stone is the Ballyvoy Sandstone Formation (Millstone Grit) exposed in the cliffs between Ballycastle and Fair Head where the sandstone units are interbedded with the Carboniferous coal seams.
Ballycastle Sandstone ranges from pink, grey and yellow to white, fine to coarse-grained bedded sandstone. In polluted urban environments this sandstone decays by scaling and granular disintegration
