Ballochmoyle (also known as Ballochmyle or Mauchline Sandstone) is Permian in age (290-248 million years old) and was quarried at Mauchline, Ayrshire, Scotland where it had been quarried since the 18th Century. The quarries were at peak production at the start of the 20th Century but were closed and destined for landfill by the 1950's. Ballochmoyle is a red, fine grained, wind-rounded sandstone, rarely with visible bedding patterns. It was used throughout Scotland and was shipped as far as America
