Cultra Limestone


A less commonly used pale yellow to orange dolomitic limestone formed in the Permian age (290-248 million years ago). Cultra limestone was quarried along the shoreline at Cultra, County Down. It is pale yellow in colour and may contain fossils. It weathers poorly, including scaling and flaking, loss of face, and caverning. Used in County Down as dressing on Holywood Priory and across Belfast Lough at Carrickfergus Castle
