The Carboniferous limestones of Northern Ireland formed in shallow warm tropical seas some 354 to 290 million years ago. They outcrop in Counties Fermanagh, Tyrone and Armagh with outliers in County Down. These limestones are typically grey, white or yellow in colour although pink-red examples of Armagh and Castle Espie Limestone occur
