Scottish Carboniferous Sandstone

Unlike the English Carboniferous Sandstones which tend to be used in Northern Ireland for replacement stone in repairing historic buildings, the Scottish Carboniferous sandstones were used here extensively in the 19th Century. This is due to the busy shipping links that existed between Scotland and Northern Ireland and is confirmed by the fact that the biggest usage of Scottish stone was in Belfast and Derry City, both of which would have been major ports in the 19th Century. All of the Scottish Carboniferous sandstones represented are now no longer quarried, most of these quarries closed at the start of the 20th Century
