Stainton Sandstone is Carboniferous in age (354 to 290 million years old) and still actively quarried in Stainton, Durham where it has been quarried since the 17th Century. It is a buff sandstone with fine brown speckles and veins, fine grained with a porosity of approximately 17%. It is used throughout the United Kingdom as stone replacement and on new builds
