Tyrone Carboniferous Limestone
There are several different limestone formations in County Tyrone including Dartry and Ballyshannon Limestones, all of these were formed in the Carboniferous. There are many active and inactive quarries across County Tyrone and this limestone was widely used throughout the county in a range of building types.
Tyrone Carboniferous limestones are grey in colour, fine grained and often fossiliferous. They are relatively durable but are occasionally prone to surface loss through heavy flaking and scaling
