Carrickfergus Castle

Situated on a basalt projection from the shore, forming a rough oval in plan. Square central stone keep with an outer and inner ward defended by curtain walls of basalt rubble. Fronted by large gatehouse flanked by 2 rounded towers. Internal buildings and store houses. Many changes of use and development over the centuries.

    Assorted stone types used with variable weathering response. Basalt is in good condition with isolated evidence of greening. Sandstone exhibits some evidence of surface deterioration through granular disintegration.

    Stage 2 – Section specific remedial action is required but the extent of intervention should be limited because of the lack of distant involvement within façade boundaries.
