Remains of town wall and North gate. Un-coursed basalt rubble walls. North Gateway has one tall arch for vehicles and a smaller pedestrian arch. Top of arch ‘restored’ with battlements, coursed plain ashlar with carved coat of arms.

    Basalt is in good condition but sandstone shows some evidence of deterioration through loss of surface material and some historic corner deterioration of sandstone blocks associated with the use of a ‘hard’ mortar.

    Stage 2 – Section specific remedial action is required but the extent of intervention should be limited because of the lack of distant involvement within façade boundaries.
