Craigleith Sandstone

Craigleith Sandstone is a uniform, white to buff coloured, fine grained sandstone. It is Carboniferous in age (354 to 290 million years old) and originated from Edinburgh where it was quarried for over 300 years.

The quarry closed around 1905 and re-opened between 1922-42, some remaining loose blocks were removed in 1995 for the Chinese garden in Edinburgh’s Royal Botanic Garden but it has since been filled in and built over.
