Doulting Limestone

Doulting limestone has been quarried since Roman times in the area around Shepton Mallet in Somerset. It is of Jurassic age and is composed of fragments of older limestones that have been redeposited, this gives it a coarse granular texture.

It ranges in colour from creamy brown to yellow or grey. It is not a highly durable stone type and like all limestones is particularly susceptible to the effects of chemical dissolution and other physical weathering processes that result in a loss of architectural detail.
