Ham Hill Limestone

Ham Hill Limestone is Lower Jurassic in age (around 175 million years old) and still actively quarried near Stoke sub Hamdon, Somerset where it has been quarried since Roman times, the quarry was re-opened in 1984.

It is a buff to brown, mid to course grained limestone made up of shells, iron minerals and crystalline calcite with a porosity of around 11%. It is usually a durable stone which is generally slightly browner in colour than the other Lower Jurassic limestones and is used throughout the United Kingdom.
