English Carboniferous Sandstone

Numerous English sandstones have been used historically but the majority of occurrences on Northern Irish buildings are as stone replacement. Two of the most popular varieties of English Carboniferous Sandstone are Stanton Moor and Duke’s Sandstones, both are similar in appearance to our local sandstones and are thus widely used in stone replacement and new builds.

A wide variety of other English Carboniferous sandstones occur as replacement stone across Northern Ireland, the majority of these are buff to pink in colour and relatively uniform therefore it can be difficult to accurately identify individual types.
